The Disability Pride Parade is Back in NYC! Sunday, October 2, 2022

The DPNYC Parade had taken place annually in the month of the July, the anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, from 2015 through 2019. Unfortunately, the parade was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Because of the requests from New York’s Disability Community to have the parade in a cooler month, the parade was moved from July to October this year. We thank our community for this feedback and ask for more feedback to better guide us for this year’s parade and future events to maximize both the highest level of community participation while helping people stay safe as we celebrate and showcase our creativity. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Geraldo Rivera’s televised expose of the horrific conditions at the Willowbrook Institution for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the 35th anniversary of its closing because of the protracted efforts and struggles of the Disability Community.

2020 Disability Pride NYC Parade is Cancelled due to COVID 19

We are very sad to announce that after studying all the information about coronavirus and checking with the Mayor’s Office and other professionals, the DPNYC Board has voted unanimously that, due to the extreme risk to the health and safety of this community caused by COVID 19, there was no other choice other than cancel the 2020 Disability Pride NYC Parade.

Even if by some miracle the number of infected were to begin to subside this summer, due to social distancing, the virus will still be out there and once people start to go out again they can get sick again. There are also reports predicting a possible phase 2 of the virus come fall so simply rescheduling the parade was not an option.

This was the hardest decision we have ever had to make but the safety of the disability community is always our first concern.

The parade will be back next year bigger, stronger, and more joyful than ever so don’t lose those smiling faces and please stay safe!

2019 Disability Pride Parade: SUNDAY JULY 14th

Let your Star Shine and participate in our CREATIVITY theme at this year’s parade. Costumes, floats, hats, T-shirts, wheelchairs etc… are all encouraged. Let your imagination run wild. There will be awards handed out for the most creative ideas.

You can do that in way you choose - costumes, hats, t shirts, puppets, decorated wheelchairs, hairstyles, umbrellas, anything you can think of. Have fun with it. There will be awards for most creative ideas. This is not mandatory, just encouraged.
