The DPNYC Parade had taken place annually in the month of the July, the anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, from 2015 through 2019. Unfortunately, the parade was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Because of the requests from New York’s Disability Community to have the parade in a cooler month, the parade was moved from July to October this year. We thank our community for this feedback and ask for more feedback to better guide us for this year’s parade and future events to maximize both the highest level of community participation while helping people stay safe as we celebrate and showcase our creativity. Please contact us to build and shape our parade at DisabilityPrideParadePresident@Gmail.Com.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Geraldo Rivera’s televised expose of the horrific conditions at the Willowbrook Institution for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the 35th anniversary of its closing because of the protracted efforts and struggles of the Disability Community.
