disability pride nyc parade cancelled

Disability Pride NYC Parade 2021 Postponed Until 2022

Dear Disability Community,

We have been meeting since January to see if a 2021 Disability Pride NYC Parade was a viable option in 2021. We checked with the Department Of Health, The Mayor’s Office and watched the news of the virus and all its variants.

What we found is that even though things are considerably better than they were last year at this time we are not our of the woods yet. With the variants that are surging in the Midwest and the new double variant they found right here in New York we do not think it would be safe to bring everyone together for a large gathering like the Disability Pride NYC Parade this year.

As always safety is our number 1 concern. We also looked into virtual options but they do not allow for the main mission of our parade which is to bring this community out and together with the general public for both a celebration and a civil rights march. In the words of Disability activist and icon Nadina Laspina “for this community just being out having fun is a political act”. Without the “being out” part there is no parade.

There will be other virtual celebrations of the ADA happening so watch for them. We know Art Beyond Sight together with the Chinatown Partnership had one last year and they will be dong it again this July so check their websites for information.

As for us, we want you to know that we are still very much alive and we will be back in 2022 for sure.

AND WE ARE GOING TO PARTY LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW!!!!!
